Spoločnosť AST SpaceMobile, jedna zo spoločností pripravujúcich riešenie umožňujúce zabezpečovať pripojenie pre smartfóny zo satelitov, aktuálne oznámila uskutočnenie prvého hlasového hovoru z dnešného bežného smartfónu cez satelit.
Podporu komunikácie bežných smartfónov cez satelity predstavili alebo avizovali v poslednom období viaceré spoločnosti. AST SpaceMobile pripravuje podobne ako Starlink od SpaceX podporu pre vytváranie štandardných mobilných sietí zo satelitov, využívať satelity na pripojenie do siete podobne ako pozemné základňové stanice mobilných operátorov tak budú môcť bežné existujúce smartfóny.
AST SpaceMobile vypustila v septembri minulého roka svoj satelit BlueWalker 3, ktorý je podľa minuloročných informácií na orbite nad 500 km. Pole antén satelitu má plochu až 64 metrov štvorcových a jeho signál pokrýva viac ako 300-tisíc štvorcových míľ územia. Podľa dostupných informácií sa od AST SpaceMobile očakáva použitie viac ako stovky satelitov ako BlueWalker 3 alebo ešte väčších satelitov.
Spoločnosť avizuje poskytovanie pripojenia pre smartfóny s 5G rýchlosťami a v dnešnom oznámení avizovala úspešné otestovanie možnosti vytvárať 4G LTE a 5G siete, zároveň spomína aj 2G a 3G siete.
Pri hovore bol satelit evidentne nad územím USA, využíval frekvenčné pásmo patriace mobilnému operátorovi AT&T a hovor cez satelit bol uskutočnený z Texasu z neupraveného štandardného smartfónu Samsung Galaxy S22.
